French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) is considered one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century. A modernist composer, Milhaud was profoundly influenced by jazz he heard in Harlem on a 1922 visit to New York City and as a result his compositions incorporated both polytonality and jazz elements. His sonata for harp, suitable for advanced pedal harp, is a fantastic 20th century masterwork.

Sonata for Harp

Alfredo Casella (1883-1947) was a member of the post-Puccini generation of Italian composers. Educated at the Paris Conservatoire, he studied composition with Gabriel Faure, among others, and was classmates with Maurice Ravel, Manuel da Falla, and Igor Stravinsky. Although he enjoyed the music of his contemporary Debussy, his own compositions were in the more Romantic styles of Mahler and Strauss. His Sonata for Harp is a beautiful and virtuosic work.

A wonderful contemporary work for harp, composed in 1955 by Ernst Krenek. This work is harmonically complex, with many pedal changes, but has a timeless elegance. Krenek studied composition with late-Romantic composer Franz Schreker and was interested in both neo-classical and aleotoric styles of music. This work is dedicated to harpist Nicanor Zabaleta.
