Symohonie Fantastique, Op. 14 (Harp 1)
The first harp part to Hector Berlioz's 1830 Symphonie Fantastique: Episode de la vie d'un Artiste...en cinq parties (Fantastic Symphony: An Episode in the Life of an Artist, in Five Parts. The harp plays in the second movement, a waltz movement entitled Un bal (A Ball) along with a second harpist whose part echoes the first, and also doubles at intervals. This work tells the story of an artist whose opium dreams take him in pursuit of his love (symbolized in each movement by the same theme, an example of an idee fixe). The harp plays an incredibly prominent role in this second movement and the parts themselves are very advanced. Berlioz wrote in his memoirs that it was incredibly difficult to have this work performed because of the difficulty of finding two capable harpists able to play the parts anywhere outside of Paris. Because of it's difficulty, this part is a great one for any harpist to keep on hand to practice and have ready for any performance opportunities.

Tanka
Born in 1941 in Belfort France, Bernard Andres studied at the Conservatoires of Besancon, Strasburg and Paris, where he won a first prize for harp. He was engaged as a soloist in the Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio-France, while pursuing a composing career as well. Bernard Andres is today a leading composer of music for the harp. He writes in a variety of styles for harpists of all skill levels, and has developed his own notation style and a number of special harp effects. Andres is also a noted teacher who has influenced an entire generation of French harpists. His books are well-known required repertoire for most harp students in France, and are great for recitals.

This charming solo for the intermediate-advanced pedal harp offers ample opportunity to display contemporary harp techniques within a piece that is both melodically beautifully and harmonically interesting.

Technical Studies Volume 1
A collection of technical studies for the developing harpist student. Holy writes in his introduction to this work: "These studies - the result of many years' teaching - are intended to serve the purpose of imbuing technical work on the harp with interest, and insofar as possible, with variety."
Among harpist-composers, Alfred Holy is considered the "last of the romantics" and was celebrated as "Mahler's favorite harpist". His musical style is rooted in the aesthetics of late 19th century Vienna. Even his simplest pieces feature sophisticated musical ideas, with free-flowing melodies supported by an inventive use of rhythm and harmony. At Mahler's invitation, Holy was the harpist for the Vienna Philharmonic for ten years (and as such also the Vienna Opera Orchestra) and then came to Boston, where he was harpist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1913-1928.
