An edition for harp and organ of the famous "Adagietto" from Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5. This edition is in the original key (F major) and the flowing harp part consists of arpeggios and octaves. The arrangement is suitable for the intermediate-advanced pedal harpist and the organ part provides the texture of the orchestral accompaniment. This arrangement is by Joachim Dorfmuller.

Mahler's heart-rending "Adagietto" is the most performed movement of his 5th Symphony. It has appeared in the film Death in Venice and Leonard Bernstein conducted a 1968 performance in St. Patrick's Cathedral, NY at the funeral of Robert Kennedy. The harp part floats over the sehr langsam line of the string accompaniment which is beautifully recreated in this edition by the organ.

The "Adagio Cantabile" from the Sonata Pathétique by Ludwig van Beethoven arranged for harp by Daniel Burton.

This intermediate level arrangement for pedal harp retains the haunting melody from Beethoven's original Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, Opus 13, written in 1798 when the composer was 27. This piece was one of Beethoven's first works to achieve widespread popularity. The work has been used in popular films and television shows and is also an important work often recorded and performed by professional concert pianists. Burton's arrangement makes available to the classical harpist this wonderful work.

Adagio for Harp and String Quartet
This "Adagio" for harp and string quartet was composed by Pytor Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) during his days as a student at the conservatory in St. Petersburg. The work is fairly short, but despite being one of his early works it already reveals Tchaikovsky's distinctive musical style. The harp part consists of full chords accenting downward moving arpeggios that become increasingly chromatic. This work is suitable for the intermediate-advanced or advanced pedal harpist. It would be an excellent less well-known Romantic work to program as part of a chamber music recital.
Includes score for harpist and separate parts for Violin I, Violin II, Viola and Cello. Score is 6 pages.

An arrangement for intermediate-advanced pedal harp of the Adagio movement from Haydn's "Cello Concerto in D." This arrangement was commissioned by Barbara Pniewska-von Wurtzler in memory of her father, violist Hubert Pniewski. The original concerto for solo cello was composed in 1783 for Antonin Kraft, a cellist in Prince Nikolaus's Esterhazy Orchestra. Burton's arrangement incorporates Alberti style bass as well as flat palm notes in faithfulness to the early-Classical style of the original work.

An arrangement by Daniel Burton of the "Adagio" from Haydn's "Farewell Symphony" No. 45. The right and left hands exchange roles throughout this piece, with triplet figures and Baroque accompaniment patterns moving from the treble to the bass register. This arrangement was commissioned by Barbara Pniewska-von Wurtzler on behalf of the New York Harp Ensemble in fond memory of Aristid von Wurtzler.
Fraz Josef Haydn's composed this work in the summer of 1772 in Sopron, Hungary when his patron, Count Esterhazy had lengthened the family's summer vacation to the extent that the Esterhazy musicians were homesick and missed their wives, who had remained in Eisenstadt. As a subtle message to his patron, Haydn composed this symphony where during the final movement, the musicians one by one finish their parts, blow out the candles on their music stands and quietly leave the stage until only two muted violins are left playing. The suggestion must have made an impression because the Count and his staff returned home the day following the first performance!
Suitable for the intermediate or intermediate-advanced pedal harpist.

One of the five beautiful hymns St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) composed at the request of Pope Urban IV (1261-1264), to commemorate the establishment of the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1264. The hymn is found in the Roman Missal as a prayer of thanksgiving after Mass.
This arrangement is suited for the intermediate lever or pedal harpist. The first two lines of music include the spoken text of the chant "I devoutly adore you, O hidden God,/Truly hidden beneath these appearance./My whole heart submits to you,/And in contemplating you,/It surrenders itself completely."

Theme and variations on French opera tunes for solo pedal harp
These pieces are believed to date from around 1770-1780, a time when when the single-action pedal harp enjoyed a great vogue and Paris was swarming with harp teachers. No composer is known for certain, but the collection features marches attributed to two of Gretry's operas: Le hurun and Les deux avares . All the pieces are believed to be his compositions. Each tune is presented as a theme and variations. The classical era was very fond of grace notes, trills, and turns, so each successive variation showcases distinct technical patterns and expressive decorative devices with growing rhythmic complexity. All pieces arranged by Dominique Piana. 24 pages.

The opening melody in this work is absolutely lovely, and the piece flows through a series of musical episodes that include dramatic, sweeping arpeggios and delicate moments of bell-like harmonics. An excellent recital showpiece, this work is also a good source of technical study for intermediate-level pedal harp students.

Marcel Lucien Tournier (1879-1951) studied harp under R. Martenot and Alphonse Hasselmans at the Paris Conservatoire, where he was awarded first prize in harp in 1899. In 1912 he was appointed harp professor at the Paris Conservatoire where he trained many well-known harpists.

This work is often requested for weddings or other harp events, and this arrangement for flute, cello and harp provides a great opportunity to perform this work with a small ensemble. The harp part is suitable for a beginner-intermediate or intermediate level pedal harpist; the part does include some more complicated techniques (harmonics, pedal changes, etc.) but on the whole the harp accompaniment is relatively simple. There is also a page of explanation on some of the harp notation.

An arrangement by Daniel Burton for intermediate pedal harp of this excerpt from Handel's 1711 opera Rinaldo (the first Italian language opera ever written specifically for the London stage). This sprightly little air features a series of upward moving triplet arpeggios that transition into a middle section of melody played with full, four-finger chords. A series of glissandos serve as an introduction to the return of the triplet figures which then flow back into a series of glissandos at the elegant finish.
