"Clair de Lune" opens the work with a simple series of dyads and eighth-note melodic figures (the arpeggios don't come in until the Christmas carols). The fantasy then flows into "Still, Still, Still" and "Clair de Lune" returns as a segue into "Silent Night." The harp plays in the second movement, a waltz movement entitled Un bal (A Ball) along with a second harpist whose part echoes the first, and also doubles at intervals. This work tells the story of an artist whose opium dreams take him in pursuit of his love (symbolized in each movement by the same theme, an example of an idee fixe). The harp plays an incredibly prominent role in this second movement and the parts themselves are very advanced. Berlioz wrote in his memoirs that it was incredibly difficult to have this work performed because of the difficulty of finding two capable harpists able to play the parts anywhere outside of Paris.
